Hoping for the Best

“Is there any way we can adjust these lights?” Rudy was at Sammy’s elbow, squinting up at the lights on the ceiling of Sunny Cove Services. “They’re far too harsh. They’re going to make Stephen look much older than he is.”

Sammy pressed her lips together as she glanced at Rob. This was just the latest iteration of dealing with Rudy. “I don’t think there’s much we can do about them.”

The campaign manager wiped a slick of sweat off his brow. “That’s not good. I knew I should’ve come here yesterday to check it out, and then maybe we could’ve brought in some different lights on stands.”

“We didn’t do anything to change the lighting at the hotel,” Rob pointed out.

“And we didn’t need to,” Rudy said impatiently. “That old building is already dim, and it created a perfect atmosphere. But think about it, you two. Mr. Montgomery’s presence is obviously creating a stir in this town. With all the chaos at the hotel, I fully expect this engagement to be even more in the public eye. I just wish I could control what kind of phones and cameras people record with. There’s no telling how terrible their footage will be when they post it on social media.”

“But it’s not a movie. I don’t see why it needs to be such a big production.” Sammy wouldn’t have made this argument if she hadn’t spent the last hour with Rudy, talking about how the light would change as the sun went down, whether or not Mr. Montgomery’s suit would go with the carpet, and if they needed to have more ‘Montgomery for Governor’ signs hanging on the stage. And then, of course, Rudy had insisted that the bunting along the bottom edge of the stage be steamed until it was free of any wrinkles.

This earned her another irritated sigh from the campaign manager. “And that’s exactly why this is my job, and not yours. You don’t understand. Every single thing that Stephen does will be in the public eye, and that means someone will be scrutinizing it. It’ll either reflect poorly on him or on me, and neither one is acceptable. I mean, I didn’t work in the movie industry for two decades without learning a thing or two.”

“Yes, Mr. Montgomery had mentioned that’s how the two of you met. What, exactly, did you do?”

Rudy flapped a hand in the air as he darted forward to once again adjust the bunting. “You name it! I started out getting coffee on a sound stage for all the people who thought they were more important than me. I moved up to painting sets, and then as the times changed there were more options for special effects. I could’ve been a director if I’d stayed in the business.”

“I see.” And Sammy really did. At least Rudy’s background gave some logic to his fuss over every aspect of this speaking engagement.

“The campaign trail is like one long, drawn-out movie,” Rudy continued to explain as he straightened a row of chairs that Sammy had already fixed once.
